Ever since I moved to Alabama, I wanted to go visit this “treasured and famous” Birmingham spot. I finally had a chance to stop there for lunch before my visit to Montevallo Park, the new community by local Birmingham builders, Tower Homes. With the bright future for new homes in Irondale, these beautiful Craftsman-style homes are located a few minutes from Historic Irondale and the Irondale Café.
If you are from Birmingham, Alabama you have probably heard about Irondale Café which was the setting for the wonderful novel Fried Green Tomatoes at the WhistleStop Café’ by author Fannie Flagg. This restaurant, located at Historic Irondale District, became famous after the movie ‘Fried Green Tomatoes’ was filmed there in the early 90’s. Shortly after the movie became a hit, tourists from all over started coming to the “Whistle Stop Café” in Irondale, and the restaurant became famous for it’s traditional locally grown, homemade cooked cuisine as well as its charming atmosphere inspired by a Whistle Stop train and its movie theme.
The restaurant was busy during lunch time. Thanks to its very convenient location to Birmingham’s downtown district, lots of young professionals, business people, families, and local people enjoyed their meal in Irondale Café. The menu offers a variety of delicious Irondale Café Original “Whistlestop” Recipes like Fried Green Tomatoes, Seafood, Fried Chicken, Roasted vegetables and famous Apple Crisp cobblers, and pies. The restaurant has the capacity to seat large amounts of customers so don’t be discouraged if there’s a line out the door. All their meals are served cafeteria-style, which allows you to have a nice sit-down meal without the extra waiting time.
A friend and I enjoyed our delicious lunch as well as meeting Billy Jr., the owner of Irondale Cafe. His restaurant took us back in time with its old-fashioned manners, southern hospitality, and charm. Billy Jr. and his staff made us feel welcomed and well cared for during our visit. We enjoyed our conversation about food, movies, and the new Birmingham homes being built nearby in Montevallo Park. Billy believes in a great future of Irondale, because of it’s tradition, history, and convenience. Irondale Café is surrounded by little boutiques, paint shop, book shop, and other small business right across the nicely renovated Irondale Train station. It’s not hard to see why Irondale’s Historical District is becoming such an attractive location with great promise in store!
After our visit to the Irondale Café, we headed to Montevallo Park, conveniently located just around the corner from there. My friend wanted to see this young and fresh community, which is being built as you read this post and will be move-in ready in just a few weeks. These craftsman-style homes in Birmingham embrace affordable luxury and convenience. With open floor plans and other impressive details, these homes will sell fast! These brand new homes start in the $170’s.
